On Monday, August 10, the Department of Transportation and Public Works will begin a major project on the Charlottetown Perimeter Highway (CPH) between Route 2 East, St. Peters Road, and Route 2 West, the Malpeque Road. The project will see the section of road widened to four lanes to allow for safer and more efficient traffic flow. The project will also see the extension of the Oak Drive overpass, and an expansion to the intersection at St. Peters Road.
“This work will provide a much needed expansion to this important section of highway,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “Traffic volumes are increasing as Charlottetown and surrounding communities continue to grow, so improvements must be made to better handle that growth.”
In addition to improving our transportation network, this project is an important component of government’s Capital Budget, which will see more than half a billion dollars invested in Island infrastructure over the next five years. The Capital Budget was crafted with two goals in mind: significant improvements to Island infrastructure and economic stimulus during the global downturn.
The project will take place over two years. This year, the work will be completed between Route 2, Malpeque Road and Route 15, Brackley Point Road. The department will also complete changes to the intersection at St. Peters Road. In late September, the Oak Drive Overpass will be closed to traffic as modifications to the structure begin. The overpass will remain closed until its targeted completion date in June of 2010. Work will begin on the section between Brackley Point Road and St. Peters Road this year, and will wrap up in late spring next year. Two way traffic will be maintained throughout the construction period but minor delays may be expected. Please obey all traffic control personnel for the safety of workers and other road users.
