Waterfowl hunting season extended

A healthy and growing population of waterfowl on Prince Edward Island has led Environment Canada to extend the waterfowl hunting season, says Agriculture and Forestry Minister George Webster.

“We are very pleased that the waterfowl hunting season has been extended, as hunting is an important part of our Island heritage and it contributes to our provincial economy,” said Minister Webster. “Hunters are also valuable partners in our conservation efforts by helping to manage wildlife populations.”

Earlier this year, the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada announced changes to the Canada Goose season and bag limit for this year. Hunters in possession of a Federal Migratory Bird Hunting Permit, a valid Provincial Hunting Licence and an early September special permit may participate in the early season which runs September 3-16. Conditions of the early permit require hunters to indicate the locations they hunt, obtain permission from the landowner, and submit a log of all hunting activity by September 30, 2013. Permits are available from the Forests, Fish and Wildlife Offices in Southampton, Charlottetown and Wellington.

The full hunting season reopens October 1 and is extended two weeks to December 31 for all waterfowl.

“Hunting provides economic, social and environmental benefits, and I wish all hunters a safe and successful season,” said the minister.
