Veterans to be honoured with new Route 2 signage

Signage on Route 2, Veterans Memorial Highway will soon get a facelift in an effort to honour those who served our country, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.

“With Remembrance Day just around the corner it’s important that we look at ways we can honour the men and women who’ve served our country,” said Minister Vessey. “With that in mind, we plan to replace all of our Route 2 marker signs to reflect the ceremonial name of the highway. These new signs will include the route number, the name of the highway and a poppy symbol.”

The first of the new signs was unveiled today in front of the Kensington Legion on Route 2, Veterans Memorial Highway. In total about four hundred signs will be replaced over the next two years. The idea was first proposed by Colonel J.D. Murray (retired), Chair of the Commemoration Committee for Royal Canadian Legion Branch Nine in Kensington.

“This is a great way for the province and the department to show that veterans deserve to be honoured for the sacrifices they’ve made for this country,” said Colonel Murray, a veteran of three peace keeping forces in the middle east. “This is a great day for the Royal Canadian Legion and a great day for veterans in Prince Edward Island, I want to thank the department on behalf of veterans across the province.”

Also on hand for today’s unveiling were Minister of Finance and Municipal Affairs and MLA for Kensington-Malpeque Wes Sheridan, members of the Korean Veterans Association, the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping, and the Canadian Navy, Army and Air Cadets.
