Two valuable seniors’ home repair programs now accepting applications

Two valuable grant programs that help Island seniors pay for necessary repairs or modifications to their home will be accepting applications starting today, says Minister of Family and Human Services Tina M. Mundy.

“I am pleased that we are able to offer the Seniors Safe @ Home Program and the Seniors Home Repair Program again this spring,” said Minister Mundy. “Since the development of these two programs hundreds of Island seniors have received grants to help make necessary repairs and modifications to their homes, improving accessibility and enabling them to stay in their homes longer.”

The Seniors Home Repair Program provides up to $2,000 to make essential repairs to a senior’s home such as roofs, windows, plumbing or heating. The Seniors Safe @ Home Program provides up to $5,000 to assist seniors to make modifications to their home that supports their mobility. To receive funding, individuals must be over 60 years of age and meet the income qualifications. These programs will begin accepting applications today.

Applications that were received during the last intake of these two programs and qualified for the programs, but did not receive funding, are still on file. Those applicants will not have to reapply for the program. Individuals would have received a letter from the Department of Family and Human Services, Housing Services Division, informing them that their application will be held until the next round of funding was available.

Last spring, government provided additional funding for these programs; Minister Mundy says she is hopeful the upcoming budget will bring good news for home repair and renovation programs offered through the Department.

“Government recognizes the value in providing support to Islanders through programs like Seniors Safe @ Home and Senior Home Repair,” said the minister. “This is an investment not only in seniors, but also the Island’s economy. These valuable programs create opportunities for builders and contractors while also reducing pressures on long term care and hospital beds, by enabling Islanders to remain in their homes for as long as they are able to.”
