Two New Family Doctors Recruited for Montague and Souris

The Department of Health is pleased to announce two new doctors have been recruited to Kings County. Both are family physicians and one doctor will be going to Montague, the other to Souris.

“PEI now has 80 practising family physicians, more than we have ever had. We are proud of this accomplishment, but, we also realize that stabilization of physician services is extremely important,” said Minister of Health, Doug Currie. “The Department of Health, the Recruitment and Retention Secretariat, and physicians and staff in local health care facilities are working together to fill the complement of physicians in all Island communities. Recruitment is a very competitive process and retention efforts are crucial to build a stable, sustainable health care system.”

Minister Currie also indicated that retaining the physicians who have committed to work on PEI is key to ensuring the continuity of care that Islanders deserve.

Dr. Scott Campbell is the first of the two physicians to arrive and he will begin his family practice at the Montague Medical Clinic on July 2, 2008. Dr. Campbell, who is originally from Stratford, PEI, recently finished his residency training through Dalhousie University in Saint John, NB and wanted to return home to begin his practice. He says Montague offered this opportunity for him, both professionally and personally. Dr. Campbell now resides in Montague with his wife and twin daughters.

The second physician to arrive in Kings County is Dr. Ambrose Kennedy. He is currently working through the immigration process and is expected to arrive in Souris in early September. Dr. Kennedy is familiar to many in the area from his work at the Souris Hospital between March 1997 to July 2003. He is originally from Ireland and has been working in the United Kingdom since 2003. Dr. Kennedy is very pleased to be returning to the Island and will be working out of the Eastern Kings Family Health Centre located in the lower level of Souris Hospital.
