Two new anesthetists fulfill provincial complement

With the successful recruitment of two new anesthetists to the health care system, the province has fulfilled its complement in the service, says Minister of Health and Wellness Doug Currie.

“Our department’s Recruitment and Retention Secretariat works diligently to provide Islanders with access to highly skilled and expertly trained health care professionals,” said Minister Currie. “The addition of Dr. Mohamed Hassan and Dr. Andrew Roberts to our health care system should help alleviate patient wait times for surgical procedures and enhance patient care.”

“Health PEI is excited to welcome Drs. Hassan and Roberts to our hospitals,” said Dr. Richard Wedge, interim CEO of Health PEI. “The addition of their skills, experiences and expertise will enhance the efforts of our dedicated team of health care providers.”

Dr. Mohamed Hassan began working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital last week. Dr. Hassan relocated from Truro, Nova Scotia with his family. Prior to working in Truro, he worked at the Grand River and St. Mary Hospital in the Waterloo region of Ontario. Dr. Hassan completed his fellowship at the University of Ottawa in 2007.

Dr. Andrew Roberts is set to begin work at the Prince County Hospital in early July. He is currently finishing his residency training at the University of Ottawa where he has served a term as Chief Resident of the Anesthesia group.

“My wife and I have deep Island roots and have always wished to come back to the province to raise our young daughters,” said Dr. Roberts. “Working in Prince Edward Island affords me a balance between my work life and personal life which in turn will allow me to be a better caretaker of my patients and ambassador for the profession.”

“The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to building a stronger, more accessible, health care system,” said Minister Currie. “To achieve this goal, we are continuously seeking out qualified health care professionals to meet our recruiting needs.”
