Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Presents Annual Environmental Awards

* Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal [to May 2015]
In Prince Edward Island, maintaining a balance between the need for improved roads and bridges and the need for environmental protection can be a challenge. Construction projects must meet strict environmental standards before they can proceed and they must maintain those standards through the course of the project. It is difficult but rewarding work. With that in mind, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal (TIR) recognizes one Island company and one departmental employee annually for their efforts to protect the environment. This year’s winners of the annual TIR environmental awards are Island Coastal Services and Mr. Danny MacDonald.

“Protecting the environment is one of our priorities on each and every construction project,” says Minister Ron MacKinley. “These award winners have shown tremendous dedication to ensuring the environment is not negatively impacted by our capital improvements.”

Island Coastal Services was recognized after their work on the Hunter River Route 2 improvement project and the Coles Creek culvert liner installation. Both of these projects required thorough sediment control and run-off protection and both were handled with upmost care and professionalism.

Mr. Danny MacDonald was recognized for his years of dedication to the environment through his work with TIR in general, but specifically for his work on the Hunter River project and the Charlottetown Bypass expansion. Mr. MacDonald consistently demonstrated leadership in environmental management in working with the contractor, environmental management staff, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry to ensure every possible environmental control was in place and functioning throughout the entire project.
