Island children are encouraged to spend some time reading this summer with the TD Summer Reading Club, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.
“The summer reading club is a great way for children to enjoy reading and maintain their reading skills over the summer,” said the minister. “The goal is to have each child read or be read to for at least 15 minutes a day.”
This year’s theme is Imagine. Each child will receive a full-colour poster by artist Dusan Petricic and a logbook to keep track of their reading. Children will earn stickers throughout the summer as they read and will receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the program.
For the past nine years, the Prince Edward Island Public Library Service has partnered with Library and Archives Canada and the TD Bank Financial Group to provide a summer reading club for children, young adults and their families. Children can join the club at any Island library branch and can read materials in any language to participate. Events will be held at local library branches across the province.
The program, which is developed for children of all ages, runs through July and August. Families are encouraged to contact their local library for the branch start dates.
The provincial launch of the club will be held Friday, June 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Confederation Centre Public Library. Families are invited to attend the launch, where the Murphy’s Centre theatre troupe Rag Tag Players will perform the play Where the Wild Things Are. The performance is supported by the Friends of the Confederation Library.
