March 25 to 31 is Social Work Week in Prince Edward Island, and the Province of Prince Edward Island recognizes the significant contributions of social workers to the well-being of Prince Edward Island children. The 2007 theme is “Making a Difference in Children’s Lives.” “This week is an occasion to recognize the important, and often difficult work, of the 223 Registered Social Workers of Prince Edward Island,” said Hon. Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island. “Whether working in child protection, adoption services, foster care, counselling services, the court system, mental health services, addiction services, hospital settings or with children in care, social workers are helping to promote the healthy development and overall well-being of children and their families.”

Social Work Week is organized by the Prince Edward Island Association of Social Workers to draw attention to the importance of the profession. Margaret Kennedy, President of the Prince Edward Island Association of Social Workers, advised that the Distinguished Service Award will be presented to a long-time member on International Social Work Day, March 27.

Premier Binns congratulated social workers across the province for the very good work they are doing and urged them to continue to work together, with their local communities, to address issues and concerns of children and their families.
