Seniors who need repairs or modifications to their home still have time to apply to two valuable programs, says Minister of Family and Human Services Doug Currie.
“These programs are great examples of how we are enabling Islanders to maintain their independence and dignity as they age,” said Minister Currie. “We want to ensure that seniors have the support they need to plan for a healthy and active life where they choose, and most people choose to be in their own home.”
Applications are being accepted for the Seniors Home Repair Program and the Seniors Safe @ Home Program. These programs can help Island seniors make necessary repairs and modifications to their homes such as new roofs, windows and heating systems or modifications to make their homes more accessible, such as wheelchair ramps or renovations to kitchens and bathrooms.
The Seniors Home Repair Program provides up to $2,000 to make essential repairs to senior’s homes and the Seniors Safe @ Home Program provides up to $5,000 to assist seniors to make modifications that support their mobility. These programs are accepting applications until 5:00 pm on January 15, 2016. After that date applications for the 2015-16 year will be closed. Applications received after that date, and are eligible for the programs, will be held until the next intake of the programs in the spring.
The Province recently provided an additional $400,000 to these programs, almost doubling the funding for a total investment of close to $1 million in 2015-16. To date, more than $900,000 has been approved for projects to enable Island seniors to make necessary repairs and modifications to their homes. With over 320 projects completed and another 70 projects under way, these programs are proving very valuable to Island seniors.
