Over the next three days, officials from the provincial Department of Transportation and Public Works will be working with commercial vehicle operators on the Island to help improve the safety of the province’s roads. The annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Road Check event starts today across North America and on Prince Edward Island. The event sees provincial commercial vehicle safety officers and law enforcement agencies out in full force to perform inspections of commercial vehicles. The goal is to ensure drivers are operating their vehicles in as safe a manner possible.
“This event serves as an excellent way to keep industry informed about important regulations that are in place for the safe operation of commercial vehicles on Island roads,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “It also gives our safety officers another opportunity to exercise their skills and build healthy relationships with industry members.”
This year’s CVSA Road Check will focus on the North American Standard Level 1 Inspection, which examines all of the following: driver’s license, medical examiner’s certificate and waiver, alcohol and drugs (if applicable), driver’s record of duty status, hours of service, seatbelt, vehicle inspection report, the braking system and coupling devices.
The inspections will take place at the provincial scales at Borden-Carleton. Last year, a total of 93 commercial vehicles were inspected and 11 were found to be out of service. Officials are hoping to see improvement on those numbers this year.
