Review of teaching positions complete

The review of staffing plans for the upcoming school year is complete, and 28 additional teaching positions will be added to the allocation for the English Language School Board this fall, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry.

The review was a collaborative process with the Board and school principals.

“Our Government understands the concerns of teachers regarding the timing of the budget and the need to examine policies with the Board such as zoning and classroom composition to determine how to best invest our resources in the frontlines,” said Minister Perry. "We will continue to work together with the board, teachers, the PEI Teachers Federation, parents, community partners and the Home and School Federation to support student excellence.”

The English Language School Board worked with school principals over the past two weeks to undertake a review of staffing plans for the upcoming school year. The Board, working with principals, determines the allocation of teachers for individual schools.

The Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture will continue to work with the school boards, teachers, parents, students and the community to engage in policy discussions on long-term plans to support student achievement.

“Prince Edward Island continues to maintain one of the lowest educator-student ratios, and education funding has grown 37 per cent in the last eight years,” said the Minister. “Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet with the P.E.I. Home and School Federation and I look forward to continuing a collaborative discussion with them and all of our partners on our shared goal of student learning.”
