Registration continues for summer learning opportunities

Students are encouraged to take advantage of summer learning opportunities, says Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Doug Currie.

“Government supports a 21st Century learning environment that extends beyond the traditional school year,” said Minister Currie. “Summer learning opportunities allow students to complete required courses for graduation, take extra credits or improve their class marks.”

Summer learning opportunities have various benefits. They allow students flexibility to participate in classes that may not fit into a regular academic schedule. A faster pace of learning and smaller class sizes can provide a positive challenge for some students. Some students benefit by focusing on one subject at a time. Many students are more motivated to succeed when they invest their summer holiday time to school work.

“Participation in summer learning programs has increased steadily in recent years,” said Minister Currie. “More students are taking cooperative education programs in the summer and gaining valuable work experience while earning high school credit. As well, our growing immigrant population has led to an increase in registration for summer courses in English as an Additional Language.”

Courses are offered in English, Math, Physics and Cooperative Education.

Classes for Summer Learning Opportunities begin July 4, 2011 and continue for six weeks. Each credit consists of 110 hours of instructional time. Cooperative Education courses may be completed in fewer than six weeks depending on arrangements for work placements.

In the summer of 2010, more than 200 Island students participated in summer learning programs.
