Donations from generous Islanders will help the Canadian Red Cross on Prince Edward Island continue to fund education programs, training, and disaster preparation and response here at home.
The annual campaign allowing customers of the 18 PEI Liquor outlets to donate to the Canadian Red Cross netted $34,425 this past July. The program has raised a total of $195,000 for local Red Cross programming since it began five years ago.
“The Canadian Red Cross has always been there when Islanders have needed it the most,” said the Hon. Allen Roach, minister responsible for the PEI Liquor Control Commission. “In turn, Islanders continue to give back during the annual campaign, and I can’t think of a more deserving organization to receive these donations.”
The Canadian Red Cross keeps children safe by updating canoes and life jackets for its water safety program run through day camps. It trains and equips volunteers and staff to respond to local disasters such as the 2015 Prince Street fires.
Past PEI Liquor store donations have purchased food vouchers, clothing, medications, temporary accommodations, and comfort kits and blankets for Islanders affected by disasters.
“Thanks to campaigns like the Liquor Control Commission, the Canadian Red Cross on Prince Edward Island has been able to prosper and grow,” said Laura Johnson-Montigny, the Canadian Red Cross’ provincial director for Prince Edward Island. “With the help of Islanders’ generous donations, we are able to provide more programming each year all across Prince Edward Island. Thank you.”
