Public input vital to renewing Health PEI’s strategic plan

Islanders have an opportunity to shape the future of health care on Prince Edward Island by responding to a survey on Health PEI’s 2013-2016 strategic plan, says Leo Steven, chair of the Health PEI Board of Directors.

“Our current strategic plan was developed when we existed as the Department of Health, so this is a chance for Health PEI to fully engage Islanders on the direction the organization should take in the next three years,” Steven said. “All Islanders can provide their feedback in an easy-to-use, web-based survey. In addition, a series of focus groups throughout the province will help us gather even more public input in the coming weeks.”

The strategic plan is a high-level document that sets the three-to-five-year direction for our health system. The province’s Health Services Act requires that Health PEI renew its plan every three years. The key components are:

• mission, which describes our purpose as an organization;

• values, describing what we bring to our roles as health professionals and providers;

• vision, which is what we hope to become in the next five to 10 years;

• goals and objectives, the things we will do to get there; and

• indicators, which are the ways we will measure our progress.

“Our strategic plan is important because it sets a clear direction for the organization to follow, ensures consistent decision-making and effective use of resources, and provides a firm basis on which to evaluate our successes and identify areas for improvement,” Steven said. “The more public input we receive, the more accurately the plan will reflect the needs of Islanders and allow us to provide the right care, by the right provider, in the right place.”
