All Islanders are encouraged to join their neighbours, friends and families in reading the same novel as part of a new program to promote literacy and foster a life-long love of reading, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey.
“The One Book One Island book club program is like creating a book club and inviting the entire province to join in on the reading and the discussion,” said the Minister. “I invite all Islanders to read the book and discuss it with your book club, your friends, your family, your neighbours, and perhaps even with visitors to the Island.”
The Public Library Service will be launching the program on May 25. All Islanders are invited to attend the One Book One Island launch where the selected book will be revealed. The launch will take place at the Confederation Centre Public Library at 11 a.m. on May 25.
Throughout the summer, libraries across the Island will be hosting One Book One Island events to help encourage discussions. In September, the author of the selected book will visit Prince Edward Island to talk about the book and celebrate the first One Book One Island program.
After the launch, multiple copies of the book will be available for borrowing from all 26 library branches in a variety of formats, in English and French.
In addition, the Public Library Service will partner with The Bookmark bookstore in Charlottetown. Copies of the selected book will be available for purchase from The Bookmark with a 10 per cent discount available to those presenting a Prince Edward Island Public Library Service library card. After the launch, Islanders will have the entire summer to read the book.
