The province is moving forward on our commitment to provide a safe and secure access and exchange of children who are in the middle of high-conflict custody situations.
“We are looking to engage public partners to create a Supervised Access and Exchange Program,” said Premier Wade MacLauchlan, Minister responsible for Justice and Public Safety. “The main objective of this program is to provide a safe, neutral and child focused setting where supervised visits or exchanges of children between parents or caregivers can take place. This program will help reduce a child’s exposure to the difficult issues that parents are dealing with regarding custody and visitation and will alleviate the conflict that arises during visits or exchanges.”
The aim of the program is to have a service site in each county across the province. More than one service provider could be selected if a single provider is unable to provide Island wide access.
The community agency must be able to provide a service that meets a variety of needs, including, but not limited to:
• the ability to accommodate pre-arranged times to pick up and drop off children with no contact between parents;
• trained staff who will closely supervise children at all times during service delivery;
• availability of additional persons to supervise staff;
• support and intervention by police if necessary; and
• presence of panic alarms to be used in emergencies.
