The Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, Honourable Barbara Hagerman and Premier Robert Ghiz announced today that Prince Edward Island will actively support provincial and national celebrations in 2012 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years of service to Canada and the Commonwealth.
“We are extremely excited about the possibilities available to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,” said Lieutenant Governor Hagerman. “Queen Elizabeth has served the Commonwealth with grace and distinction throughout her time as Sovereign and we look forward to being a part of celebrations in her honour next year.”
On February 6, 2012, Queen Elizabeth will mark the 60th anniversary of her reign. Celebrations and commemorations are expected to take place throughout the year. The Lieutenant Governor’s Office, Executive Council Office and Protocol Office will be working together to promote Prince Edward Island’s active participation in Jubilee celebrations.
“Prince Edward Island is a historically rich province and Islanders understand the important role Queen Elizabeth plays as our Head of State,” said Premier Ghiz. “The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is a time for our province and all Canadians to celebrate the contributions of Queen Elizabeth to our nation and to reflect on the growth of our country during her reign.”
Her Majesty and Prince Philip made their first visit to Canada and Prince Edward Island in 1951 as Their Royal Highnesses The Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Edward Island was privileged to host them again in 1959, 1964 and in 1973 as part of Prince Edward Island’s centennial celebrations as a province of Canada.
