Prince Edward Island book award celebrates Island literature

The Prince Edward Island Book Award brings awareness to literature published by Islanders, and celebrates the high quality of these Island publications, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey.

“Prince Edward Island has a vibrant community of authors, editors, designers and publishers,” said Minister Vessey. “Every two years, the province honours these cultural contributors with the Prince Edward Island Book Award. More than 30 nominations were received for the awards this year.”

The 2010 award ceremony will be held November 24 at the Confederation Centre Public Library. Winners will receive a cash prize, as well as a specially created product from an Island artist. Previous winners include Richard Lemm, Georges Arsenault and Joseph Sherman.

An independent jury considers the overall design, writing, illustration and presentation of each submitted book. Works can be submitted in either English or French. Prizes are awarded in three categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
