EnviroAge Plastic Industries Ltd., located on the Lower Pownal Road, has just succeeded in penetrating the Caribbean market with recycled plastic lumber. A container of Island plastic lumber was shipped to the Dominica Republic just last week, and EnviroAge Plastic is presently in the process of manufacturing a flat bed trailer load of utility grade agricultural fence posts destined for the mid-west of the United States.
“I never thought I would need the help of a world atlas to see where I am selling our product,” jokes Corey Peters, Vice-President of EnviroAge Plastic and former environmental engineer.
Management and staff of EnviroAge Plastic Industries Ltd. recently invited members of the media along with the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, on behalf of the Honourable Joe McGuire, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Wilbur MacDonald, MLA for Belfast Pownal Bay on behalf of the Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology to see first-hand the progress of this growing company.
“EnviroAge Plastic is to be commended for its commitment to re-establishing the plastic lumber industry here on Prince Edward Island,” said Mr. MacAulay. “The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Innovation Skills Development Initiative, is proud to have supported this company in its efforts to research and develop specialized processes and products in order to become more competitive in the international marketplace.”
To manufacture its existing line of plastic lumber products, EnviroAge Plastic receives plastic waste from land-fill sites, farmers, manufacturing industries, and recycling centres. The collected plastic is prepared and blended into a composite profile mixture used to produce plastic lumber. This innovative product has been used by many different organizations, individuals and industries for decking, docks, playground equipment, boardwalks, picnic tables, benches, garbage receptacles, lobster traps and buoy staffs.
The company markets to Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario and can this month proudly say, internationally.
“Businesses whose focus is environmental responsibility are key to the province’s economic development,” said Minister Currie. “EnviroAge has demonstrated initiative and innovation in the development of their business and will be able to add to PEI’s significant and growing export capability. I congratulate EnviroAge on seizing an opportunity and making it work.”
“All Islanders should be proud of what our Island is capable of achieving,” said Mr. Peters of EnviroAge Plastic. “Thanks to the strategic support of our Federal and Provincial governments, your milk jugs and plastic grocery bags are part of the recycled plastic lumber being used in the Caribbean and the company’s other markets.”
Thanks to the strategic support from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Government of Prince Edward Island, this innovative Island company dedicated to environmental stewardship is forging ahead with improved recycled plastic manufacturing processes and new business alliances in 2005.
