Premier's Office
Premier Ghiz leaves today for the annual meeting of the Council of the Federation. The meeting is being hosted by Premier Brad Wall and will take place in Regina, Saskatchewan, August 5-7.

This year’s meeting will provide an opportunity for provincial and territorial Premiers to discuss the economy, the impact of stimulus measures, trade, international relations, energy and climate change. A closing news conference is scheduled for Friday, August 7.

“We can see that the infrastructure based stimulus strategy we have put in place in Prince Edward Island is starting to have an effect,” said Premier Ghiz. “This meeting provides an opportunity for Premiers from across the country to discuss stimulus measures as well as policies to strengthen the economy in the long term. I also look forward to addressing a number of priorities for our province, such as innovation, post-secondary education and skills training.”

The Council of the Federation comprises all thirteen provincial and territorial premiers. The council enables premiers to work collaboratively to strengthen the Canadian federation by fostering a constructive relationship among the provinces, territories and the federal government.

Premier Ghiz will also join his colleagues at a meeting with the leaders of the National Aboriginal Organizations. This will be the first opportunity for Premiers to meet with National Chief Shawn Atleo, who was recently elected as head of the Assembly of First Nations.
