Parents are being asked for input on their child’s school experience

Parents are being encouraged to participate in a survey aimed at enhancing their child’s school experience and improving student achievement in Prince Edward Island, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

“Engaging families in the conversation is extremely important when it comes to evaluating and improving student achievement,” said Minister Currie. “A few months ago, the school system invited students and teachers to provide feedback on their experiences in the school through an online survey called Tell Them From Me. The next phase of the survey allows parents to provide anonymous feedback on how the school is supporting their child’s learning and development.”

This year, all three Island school boards are conducting research as part of the school development process. During the month of March, families will receive an invitation from their school with a username and password to complete the survey online. Schools are contacting parents using email, school newsletters and letters through Canada Post to ensure all parents are given the opportunity to participate.

The Eastern School District is also hosting a drop-in session on the evening of March 8 at Colonel Gray High School for parents who speak Farsi, Spanish, Korean, Nepali and Mandarin.

The parent survey includes questions that examine how parents support learning at home and at school, communication, as well as the social and emotional development of students. Overall results of the survey will be made available to school principals and parents.

“The information collected will be used to help evaluate how students are doing at school both socially and academically,” said Minister Currie. “I encourage all families to take a few minutes to complete the survey and tell us how the school system is addressing the needs of their child.”

Parents who do not have access to the internet or those who did not receive an invitation for the Tell Them From Me survey should contact their child’s school.
