Islanders will have the opportunity this week to meet Maureen Jennings, author of Except The Dying, which is the inspiration for the Murdoch Mysteries TV series, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry.
“This popular series was a great selection for our annual One Book One Island program which is always a hit with Islanders,” said Minister Perry. “We are very pleased that Maureen Jennings will soon be visiting libraries in Charlottetown, Summerside and Montague to spend time with her fans.”
Except the Dying by Maureen Jennings is a historical mystery novel set in 1895 in Toronto. It was shortlisted for both the Arthur Ellis and the Anthony first novel awards.
Except the Dying and the next two books in the Murdoch Mystery series were turned into made for TV movies and were the inspiration for the popular CBC series Murdoch Mysteries. Copies of the books, the TV movies and the TV series have all been made available to Islanders at Prince Edward Island public libraries.
Maureen Jennings will be in PEI to do author events on the following dates:
• July 14 at 7 p.m. at the Confederation Centre Public Library
• July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Summerside Rotary Library
• July 16 at 7 p.m. at the Montague Rotary Library
One Book One Island was first launched in 2010. Past titles include Still Life by Louise Penny, The Burma Chronicles by Guy Delisle and Island: The Collected Short Stories by Allistair MacLeod. In 2014, 14 titles by Island authors were chosen as part of a special 14 Books One Island to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference.
"We are thrilled to have Maureen Jennings visit us and the opportunity provided by the One Book One Island program to bring in authors that might not otherwise come to Prince Edward Island," said Literacy and Pubic Services Librarian Rebecca Boulter. "Jennings' books, and the television series they inspired, give us a great opportunity to get Islanders talking about literacy and Canadian literature."
Copies of the novel are available for borrowing from public libraries across the Island. The Bookmark and Indigo are offering a ten per cent discount on purchases of the novel. DVD copies of the television series are also available to library users. For more information on One Book One Island 2015 visit www.library.pe.ca/onebook
