Residents of West Prince are now benefitting from improved safety at the intersection of Route 2 and O’Leary Road thanks to the completion of a new roundabout, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley.
“Vehicle speeds are fairly high at this location on Route 2, as are the traffic levels, so getting onto Route 2 from the stop location on the O'Leary Road was challenging at times,” said Minister MacKinley. “I expect motorists will quickly appreciate the inherent safety benefit of the roundabout design and feel more confidence in making movements to or from the O'Leary Rd and Route 2.”
The intersection re-opened to traffic Friday after an 11-day shutdown and detour which was needed to complete concrete and paving work at the new roundabout. The $1-million Build PEI project began in mid-August.
Several other major construction projects are also nearing completion throughout the province. They include:
- Montague Roundabout, Wood Islands Road, Valleyfield Road and Douses Road: The detour remains in place as crews complete paving on the new roundabout. Officials expect the intersection to re-open and begin operation as a single-lane roundabout by Thursday, November 4, depending on weather.
- Charlottetown Perimeter Highway, St Peter’s Road to Southgate Avenue: Crews will begin paving at this location beginning Wednesday, November 3, depending on weather. Lane closures will be required for paving but two-way traffic will be maintained through the site.
- Charlottetown Perimeter Highway, Park Street to Grafton Street: Crews have begun milling the surface on this section of roadway. Paving will begin later this week depending on weather. Lane closures will be required for milling and paving but two-way traffic will be maintained through the site.
- Stratford Road, Glen Stewart Drive to Keppoch Road: Crews continue paving and off-road work on this section of roadway. Paving is expected to wrap up by the end of the week depending on weather. Crews will continue to work on sidewalks and landscaping after paving is complete. Lane closures will be required for paving at this location and stop-and-go traffic is to be expected.
- Trans Canada Highway, Cornwall, Dutch Inn: Paving is expected to be fully complete by Friday, November 5, depending on weather. Lane closures will be required for paving but two-way traffic will be maintained through the site.
- Mill Road, Route 2 Detour, St Peter’s Bridge Project: Maintenance crews will be working on the Mill Road, a section of the Route 2 detour around St Peter’s Bridge, beginning Tuesday, November 2. Lane closures will be necessary to complete the work resulting in stop-and-go traffic.
