September 24, 2009 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]On Monday, September 28, the Department of Transportation and Public Works will close the Oak Drive Overpass to traffic as work begins to remove the overpass as part of the Charlottetown Perimeter Highway expansion project. “This closure is necessary to allow the overpass to be rebuilt to accommodate the expanded highway,” says Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley. “The closure will be an inconvenience to nearby residents over winter, but in the end those residents will have their access to Oak Drive and their connection to the local community maintained over the long term.” The project was made possible through government’s $500 million, 5-year stimulus funding package announced last year in the provincial Capital Budget. The closure will be in place until next construction season when the overpass is rebuilt and the current expansion project wraps up. Drivers are cautioned that during peak traffic times the intersection of Norwood Road and Route 2 East, St. Peters Road will experience increased traffic volumes as a result of the work.Media Contact: Andrew Sprague
