A new highway structure on Point Pleasant Road (Route 17) in Greek River, Kings County, is open to traffic, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey.
“This new bridge structure will allow safer access to the community for those who use it regularly, and for all Islanders,” Minister Vessey said. “We also are pleased the project was completed in time for visitors to use without encountering any traffic delays.”
Construction on the $350,000 project began in early May following a community information session in Murray River. The original bridge was built in 1959 and was identified for replacement as part of the department’s bridge inspection program.
Four more bridges will be replaced in 2014-15. They include structures in Augustine Cove, Clinton, Rocky Point and Souris.
“When we make proactive, strategic investments in our roads and bridges,” Minister Vessey said, “we increase the safety and efficiency of our transportation network and create jobs that bolster our economy.”
Since 2007, the provincial government has replaced or completed major repairs on 52 bridges throughout Prince Edward Island, for a total investment of more than $60 million.
