April 13, 2010 Health and WellnessThe Hon. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Health and Wellness, was pleased today to present paralympic athlete, Mark Arendz, with the Paralympic banner created in his image. “Mark is a wonderful ambassador of Prince Edward Island and we are extremely proud of his success at the 2010 Paralympic Games,” said Minister Bertram. “The pictogram images chosen to represent each of the sports were meant to convey human and heroic qualities within the silhouette. I want to congratulate Mark for having been chosen to represent his sport of Para-Nordic cross-country skiing, and I am pleased to present him with our banner of this image.” Olympic and Paralympic Games designs have a long tradition of creativity and excellence. Each Games creates its own imagery and icons to present a unique story and personality to the world. The sport pictograms have traditionally relied on a simplified silhouette form to depict each sport. The Vancouver 2010 sport pictograms also depict each sport in silhouette form; however, there is an added dynamism of the athlete in motion. More focus has been put on the athlete in order to convey the human and heroic qualities within the pictogram and by highlighting areas on the athlete’s body and equipment to help to convey the energy.
