Workforce and Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown extended congratulations to the Atlantic Veterinary College which recently received international recognition, on both institutional and individual levels in the area of epidemiology.
“It was a great privilege to join in on the celebrations at AVC this week, and to recognize the College and two individuals for their accomplishments in epidemiology,” said Minister Brown. “Their success speaks volumes to the excellent programming at the College in the areas of epidemiology and aquatics.
Dr. Ian Dohoo and Dr. Charles Caraguel received international awards recognizing them as leaders in epidemiology. The International Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics (ISVEE) presented Dr. Dohoo, professor emeritus of epidemiology at the AVC, with the Roger Morris ISVEE Award for extraordinary lifetime achievement, while Dr. Caraguel, a former AVC graduate student, received the ISVEE’s Emerging Scientist Award last month.
During AVC’s event, a portrait was also unveiled of Dr. Dohoo to recognize him for his contributions to the field of epidemiology. The portrait, commissioned by his peers, will be hung in Dohoo’s academic department, the Department of Health Management at the AVC.
In addition to the individual awards, the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiological Research at the AVC was awarded the hosting opportunity for the 2021 ISVEE conference, which will see 500 epidemiologists and economists from around the world meet and collaborate in Canada.
“Bringing these individuals to Canada is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our post secondary institutions, and the extensive work and renowned research being done at the Atlantic Veterinary College. The success of AVC’s current and former students, faculty, and staff, and the prestigious programming in place is truly impressive,” said Minister Brown.
