Minister Announces a New Active Start Initiative

Health and Wellness
The Department of Health and Wellness and the Coaches Association of Prince Edward Island (CAPEI) are introducing a new Let’s Get an Active Start initiative for children aged 0-6, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.

“Active Start is the first step towards lifelong physical fitness,” said Minister Bertram. “At this age, physical activity should always be fun, and part of the child’s daily life. Active play in a safe and challenging environment is the best way to keep children physically fit.”

Through this new initiative, parents and children are given the Let’s Get an Active Start toolkit at their 18-month visit with their Public Health Nurse. The toolkit includes a wealth of information about childhood obesity, physical literacy, fundamental skills and development for sport and for physical fitness. The toolkit also includes a bean bag for the child to play with and a collection of games and activities for parent or educators to engage in with their child.

“Through this practical toolkit, we are giving parents the necessary resources to start their children on the right track to a healthy lifestyle,” said Minister Bertram.

An early active start enhances development of brain function, coordination, social skills, gross motor skills, emotions, leadership, and imagination. It also helps children build confidence, develop posture and balance, build strong bones and muscles, promote healthy weight, reduce stress, improve sleep, learn to move skillfully, and learn to enjoy being active.

Funding for this initiative has been provided through the Canada-Prince Edward Island Sport Bilateral Agreement, and is being administered through the CAPEI.
