* Community and Cultural Affairs [to Jun 2007]
The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for Sport and Recreation and Joseph Spriet, Chair of the 2009 Bid Committee today announced the appointment of Paul M. Schurman as Bid Manager.

As part of its commitment to the 2009 Canada Summer Games Bid Committee, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs is providing the services of a Bid Manager to oversee the day-to-day activities of the bid process.

“It is my pleasure to welcome Paul M. Schurman to the 2009 Canada Games Bid Committee Team,” said Minister MacFadyen. “Paul M. Schurman will bring a wealth of experience from both national and international events to the bid committee process. He is well known in the sport, business and volunteer communities across the province and will help to ensure a first class hosting plan for Prince Edward Island.”

The Bid Committee was appointed in May to begin the planning process for Prince Edward Island to host the summer games in 2009.

“On behalf of the Bid Committee, I would like to welcome Paul to our team,” said Chair Joseph Spriet. “Paul will be a tremendous resource in assisting the bid committee in meeting its mandate of developing a first-class hosting plan for the 2009 Canada Summer Games to be hosted in Prince Edward Island.“

The bid committee is responsible for submitting a conceptual plan for hosting the games to the Canada Games Council by April 2005. The bid process includes the development of an extensive hosting plan which will address a number of issues including ceremonies and protocol, the cultural program, facilities, corporate sponsorship and marketing, language services, logistics and medical services required to ensure the success of this multi-sport event. While PEI is not bidding against any other provinces, a bid must be submitted which clearly outlines our plans and demonstrates our ability to meet or surpass the minimum requirements as established by the Canada Games Council.

Paul M. Schurman has more than 25 years in radio broadcasting experience with CJRW Radio in Summerside as former owner and general manager and has provided more than 1,500 play-by-play sports broadcasts including PEI Rocket, PEI Senators, UPEI hockey and basketball and National and World softball and baseball championships. He was awarded the Sport Canada “Doug Gilbert Award” Canadian Electronic Media Person of the Year in 1991 and served as Past President of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce and a former board member of Sport PEI. He served on the Board of Management of the 1991 Canada Winter Games and as Assistant coach for Team PEI men’s basketball at the 1981 Canada Summer Games in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
