Island export companies travel to Japan to strengthen business ties

Trade Team PEI (TTPEI) is traveling to Japan with nine PEI-based companies to participate in a multi-sector mission to develop export relationships in the area.

“The economy is our government’s top priority,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Trade missions like this one help further develop export ties in our region. Simply put, Atlantic Canada is open for business.”

“PEI products are world class,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. “Our companies are ready to export their products and expertise to the world. This trade mission is a great opportunity to develop long term trade relationships.”

Trade Team PEI, led by ACOA and Innovation PEI, plays a key role in planning activities and delivering programs that are designed to help small- and medium-sized businesses effectively compete as exporters.

“In today’s global economy, building international trade relationships is vital to the Government of Prince Edward Island’s strategy for fostering a strong provincial economy,” said the Honourable Allan Campbell, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. “Trade Team PEI is doing exciting work to create new export opportunities for Prince Edward Island in Japan and around the world.”

The Japan trade mission is a multi-sector mission taking place from February 28 to March 4. Island-based companies joining the trade delegation include representatives from the following sectors: agri-food; professional services; building products; and education. Over the course of the four-day mission, each company will participate in a series of pre-arranged, business-to-business meetings to explore potential business opportunities.

Four of the companies participating in the trade mission will also be participating in the FOODEX Trade Show which will highlight the food and beverage industry. The trade show will take place March 1 to 4, 2011.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA and the Province of Prince Edward through Innovation PEI, is supporting the mission with a combined investment of $115,200.

Trade Team PEI is a partnership network of federal and provincial government agencies and departments committed to helping PEI-based trade and export-focussed businesses succeed in their pursuit of new business opportunities in the global marketplace.
