Residents will benefit from improvements to the Grand Tracadie recreation park, thanks to an investment under the Canada–Prince Edward Island Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

Federal, provincial and community representatives today announced details of the $49,500 project that will make the park safer, more user-friendly, and encourage residents to integrate sports and physical activities into their daily lives. Improvements to be made to the park include upgrades to the baseball diamond, new lighting and fencing, as well as a new walking trail.

“The Government of Canada recognizes that strong, healthy communities require modern infrastructure,” said Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). “Through this investment, the Government of Canada is doing its part to help enhance the social and physical well-being of the community of Grand Tracadie and all Islanders.”

“The Province of Prince Edward Island is pleased to support this wonderful community initiative,” said Mr. Buck Watts, MLA for Tracadie-Hillsborough Park. “The new walking trail will give residents a scenic and safe place to walk, picnic and enjoy the outdoors. In addition, upgrades to the ball diamond and additional fencing will provide a safer place for our children to play.”

“Residents of Grand Tracadie are extremely excited about this project and grateful to the federal and provincial governments for their contributions,” said Brenda Skerry, chair of recreation for the Community of Grand Tracadie. “Our park is used year-round by people of all ages and these much needed enhancements will ensure that it will continue to serve residents and visitors for many years to come.”

MRIF is administered by the PEI Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour and ACOA through the Canada-PEI Infrastructure Secretariat. Project costs are shared on a one-third basis between the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
