Honourable Gail A. Shea, Minister Responsible for Recreation and Sport presented cheques to three Southeastern PEI community projects today under the Recreation and Sport Facilities Development Program.

The Recreation and Sport Facility Development Program is designed to assist in addressing aging facilities and facility deficiencies through the planning, construction, renovation and conservation of facilities for public recreation purposes.

Southeastern PEI communities receiving funding under the program include Belfast and two projects in the Town of Montague. Cheques were presented for the first installments of funding for each project.

"It is my pleasure to present funding to three community projects in Southeastern PEI which will assist communities in meeting the recreational and sporting needs of residents," says Minister Shea. "The Recreation and Sport Facilities Development Program was created as a way to help communities address aging facilities while providing increased opportunities for Islanders to participate in recreation and sport."

Funding of $11, 250 was approved to assist in purchasing a new ice resurfacer for the Belfast Arena. Currently the Belfast Arena uses a tractor to resurface the ice. A proper ice resurfacer will allow the arena to support additional events, provide

increased safety and allow the arena to operate more efficiently. The total project cost is $45,000.

The Community Welfare League in Montague will receive funding of $10,705 toward bowling lane renovations. Work will include roof repair and interior renovations. The total cost of the project is $42,820.

Funding of $10,000 was also approved to assist the TCAP Co-operative in renovating the Montague Pool. The $40,000 initiative will improve the pool facility and help to provide enhanced services to residents of eastern PEI.

The Recreation and Sport Facilities Development Program is an initiative of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Culture, Heritage, Recreation and Sport Division.
