Drivers are asked to slow down, read the signs and watch for workers at highway construction sites, says Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Robert Vessey.
During this peak highway construction period, Islanders should anticipate road construction, stops and detours,” said the minister. “When approaching and driving through construction zones, drivers are urged to stay within the reduced speed limits and pay careful attention to signs and directions,” he said.
“Every day, flaggers see cars speeding through construction zones where there may be uneven pavement, loose gravel and heavy equipment at work. When this happens, road workers worry about their own safety, as well as the safety of drivers and passengers,” said the minister.
“Well maintained highways are important to all of us, and so is the safety of road workers,” he said. “Serious accidents and injuries can be prevented when drivers reduce their speed, watch for workers and equipment, and drive through construction sites with care and caution.”
“Safety is the number one goal of our department and we appreciate the cooperation of the public during this busy time.”
Drivers who speed in construction zones can be fined up to $10 for each kilometre per hour that they are over the speed limit.
