Dr. Richard Wedge, Health PEI CEO, retiring

Today, after over 20 years working in health administration on Prince Edward Island, Dr. Richard Wedge announced his retirement as CEO of Health PEI.

“On behalf of my colleagues on the Board, I want to thank Dr. Wedge for his invaluable service and contribution to Health PEI, our health care system and, more importantly, to the health and well-being of Islanders,” said Health PEI Board Chair Phyllis Horne. “We have valued his leadership and advice, and wish him well and all the best in his future endeavors.”

Dr. Wedge will continue to serve as CEO until the end of May, allowing the Board time to search for his successor. The recruitment process for a new CEO is currently underway.

“It has been an honour and privilege to work as CEO of Health PEI,” said Dr. Wedge. “My time as CEO has been both challenging and rewarding. I am proud to have been part of this organization and to have worked alongside such dedicated staff and physicians who go above and beyond every day to provide Islanders with the best care.”

Prior to joining government in 1995, Dr. Wedge practiced as a family physician at the Summerside Medical Centre. During his time in government, he has held several positions including Medical Director to the Workers Compensation Board, Medical Director of East Prince Health and Medical Director of Queens Health Region. More recently, he served as Health PEI’s Provincial Medical Director and Executive Director of Medical Affairs before taking on the role as the organization’s CEO in 2012.

“The future of health care on Prince Edward Island is promising and Islanders are fortunate to have a talented team of health care providers looking after them and their families,” added Dr. Wedge.
