Be a Foster Parent – National Foster Family Week 2013

* Community Services and Seniors [to May 2015]
Helping a child who needs a home can be one of the greatest and most rewarding ways you can make a difference, says Valerie E. Docherty, Minister of Community Services and Seniors.

“I am honoured, during National Foster Family Week, to recognize and thank foster families across our province for their love and commitment to vulnerable Island children,” said Minister Docherty. “Foster parenting is filled with opportunities and challenges; however, through foster parenting, Islanders have a chance to make a positive impact on the lives of children through the love and support they provide.”

National Foster Family Week runs from October 20 to 26, and is an opportunity for people everywhere to celebrate the dedication and love that foster families share throughout the year with children in their care.

The provincial Foster Care program provides day-to-day care for children who are in the legal custody and guardianship of the Director of Child Protection, temporarily or permanently, voluntarily or through court order.

“I am also pleased this week to launch our new website, www.beafosterparent.ca,” said Minister Docherty. “Foster Parents are as diverse as the children in need of care. Our new website will help potential Foster Parents understand both the requirements and the responsibilities of being a Foster Parent, and we are hopeful that it will help to increase the number of foster parents.”
