Additional funding provided for Seniors Home Renovation Programs

Family and Human Services
Government has provided an additional $400,000 to the Seniors Home Repair and the Seniors Safe @ Home programs, says Doug Currie Minister of Family and Human Services.

“To ensure that these programs have the resources necessary to meet demands, we have made good on a promise from last spring, to invest in home repair and renovation programs,” said Minister Currie. “This is a total investment of almost $1 million in repair and renovation programs for seniors this year.”

The Seniors Home Repair program provides up to $2,000 to seniors for essential repairs, including new roofs, windows and heating systems. The Seniors Safe @ Home Program provides up to $5,000 to assist seniors to make modifications that support their mobility and could include wheelchair ramps or renovations to kitchens and bathrooms for accessibility.

So far this year, more than $900,000 has been approved for projects across the Island. More than 320 projects have been completed through both programs and seniors are working with their contractors to complete another 70 projects.

“These investments help Island seniors make necessary repairs and modifications to their homes and enable them to maintain a good quality of life and remain in their own home for as long as possible. This helps to reduce the pressure on health care systems and promotes independence,” said the Minister.
