Youth IT Program Preserving Local History

Technology PEI, in partnership with KenNet Inc., invites organizations to become involved in a unique program for youth groups and clubs that will lead to the sharing and preservation of traditions and stories from Prince Edward Island.

Between Generations provides funding to youth groups to create Web sites which preserve local traditions and historically significant events in Prince Edward Island.

Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology and minister responsible for Technology PEI, says the Between Generations program has proven to be a successful initiative for both seniors and youth.

"The program has helped to develop the information technology skills of PEI's youth, while also providing seniors with an opportunity to share the traditions and stories of Prince Edward Island with future generations."

More than 15 youth organizations from across PEI have completed projects and launched their sites, including students from the O'Leary area who have focused on the primary industries of the early 1900's - farming and fishing, as well as stories to give an overall sense of what it was like to live in those days. Members of the St. Peters Bay Junior Allied Youth Post presented their bilingual Web site on the important role their community played in World War II.

In April, the program received an Industry Canada CanConnect award for excellence in business-education partnerships showing excellence in fostering information and communications technology skills in youth and their communities.

Applicants to the program must be a recognized youth group or affiliated with a youth group. A maximum of $4,000 will be provided to the group for equipment, staffing or other expenditures necessary to complete the project. Applications are available online at www.techpei.com or by contacting April Flood at KenNet inc.,(902) 836-4003. The deadline for applications is 3 pm, Friday, October 12, 2001.

Between Generations is an initiative of Technology PEI, a provincial crown corporation established to advance the growth and development in Prince Edward Island's technology sector. Technology PEI plays a leadership role in the development, use and adoption of information technology for business and community in Prince Edward Island.
