Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment today announced the Young Environmentalists Program (YEP) will be in effect once again this summer to assist communities across the province with environmental field work.
"Students hired are interested in the environment, and the variety of environmental work experience provided by the Young Environmentalist Program will assist them in determining future career choices," said Minister MacAdam.
The Young Environmentalists Program will be operational from July 4 to August 25, 2000. Provincial government agencies, municipalities and organizations are invited to submit proposals for projects which assist in the conservation and enhancement of our environment. Typical YEP projects over the past number of years have included enhancement of fish and wildlife habitat; soil erosion control; protecting and enhancing natural areas; solid waste management (park, beach or roadside cleanup); assisting in environmental awareness and education activities including recycling and composting; and heritage road enhancement.
Project applications are evaluated to ensure that projects provide on-the-job learning opportunities that increase the environmental skills and awareness of the Young Environmentalists, in addition to providing environmental benefit to the community. The deadline for applications is June 26, 2000.
