-The Young Environmentalists Program (YEP) is gearing up for another summer of environmental work projects to be performed by youth across the Island. Honourable Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of the Department of Fisheries and Environment, in announcing the program noted that "the program is designed to educate high school and university students about the Island's environment through hands-on work experiences such as performing stream enhancement, beach clean ups, reforestation, and trail creation."
There will be ten teams of Young Environmentalists located across the Island. Each team consists of four field workers and a team leader who are assigned to work on projects in their community. The youth also have an education day each week at various sites across the Island.
This summer marks the second season for the YEP waste watch demonstration project, "Go For Green." By contacting program coordinator Ryan Neale, arrangements can be made to ‘green' your community event. The Young Environmentalists will set up sorting stations and demonstrations at your event to provide information on the PEI Waste Watch System, which will soon be implemented province-wide.
Mr. MacAdam welcomes any government agency, municipality, or environmental organization to submit project proposals to the program. For further information, please contact Ryan Neale at 368-5173.
