June 24, 1996 * Environment [to Apr 1996]The Young Environmentalists' Program is gearing up for another summer of environmental work projects to be performed by youth across the Island. Barry Hicken, Minister of the Department of Environmental Resources in announcing the program noted that "the program is designed to educate high-school and university students about the Island's environment through hands-on work experiences such as performing stream enhancement, beach clean ups, reforestation, and trail creation." The Young Environmentalists' Program team leaders began their two-week orientation program this week. The team leaders attended both media communications and conflict resolution seminars as part of their training. With the help of Program Coordinator, Sean Cain and Education Coordinator, Ryan Neale, they will be planning the summer's environmental projects for each of their crews . Each crew consists of 4 field workers and a team leader who are assigned to work at projects in their community. The youth also have an education day each week where they tour various sites across the Island. Mr. Hicken welcomed any government agency, municipality, or environmental organization to submit projects to the program. For further information, please contact Sean Cain at 368-5058. Media Contact:
