Islanders interested in upland game hunting have a unique opportunity to learn more about the sport before the season opens.
The Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry, the Ruffed Grouse Society of Prince Edward Island and the PEI Model Forest Network Partnership are hosting a free Novice Upland Game Workshop Saturday, September 23 at Glenfinnan. The workshop is open to novice hunters of all ages. Space is limited so those interested are advised to register early.
While waterfowl hunting is a longstanding tradition in PEI, many Islanders are unaware that the province offers great opportunities for upland game hunting. Common upland game species in PEI include the snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, woodcock and Hungarian partridge.
Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry Jamie Ballem said the upcoming workshop is part of ongoing efforts to encourage more Islanders to carry on the hunting tradition.
"With its patchwork of farmland, woodland, and wetlands, Prince Edward Island has ideal habitat for many upland game species so the province is a sportsman’s paradise,” said Minister Ballem. “The workshop will give novice hunters the chance to experience this first hand.”
The full-day workshop will cover all aspects of upland game hunting. Participants will learn about selecting the right firearms and hunting gear, basic identification tips, how to handle their dogs, and habitat and management options. Those who have their Hunter Safety Certificate will also be able to take part in hunting demonstrations – and take home their game to eat; and participants will have the chance to field dress upland game birds.
While the workshop is free, those interested must register in advance. The registration deadline is September 20. For further information on the workshop or to register, call the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry at 368-4683.
