Winter can be fun, especially with the large amounts of snow recently experienced across Prince Edward Island. However, with the snow comes many safety concerns. As well as concerns about slippery roads, there are many safety issues around winter recreational activities.
"The amount of snow received recently provides a wonderful opportunity to get out and play, but building snow tunnels and sledding near roads can be dangerous," says the Honourable Gail A. Shea, Minister Responsible for recreation. "I would urge all children to use caution when enjoying winter activities."
The Department of Education reminds motorists that children who walk to school may not be as easily seen, as a result of the high snow banks.
"We know motorists and parents are mindful of the potential danger," said Shauna Sullivan Curley, Deputy Minister of Education. "We would like to remind children to take extra care to be visible and noticed when walking on or near Island roads at this time of year."
The Department of Transportation and Public Works advises the traveling public to exercise the usual precautions when on Island roads this winter.
"Motorists should use extra care as they travel the roads this winter, particularly when approaching intersections and areas where children may be walking or playing," noted Hon. Don MacKinnon, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "By taking the time to pay extra attention when driving, everyone can enjoy safe winter activities." There are endless ways to enjoy the snow and other winter activities including snowshoeing, skiing, tobogganing and building snow men.
