WCB Issues Safety Notice to Commercial Building Owners

Occupational Health & Safety Services of the Workers Compensation Board of PEI wish to inform all owners of commercial buildings, constructed between the years of 1970 - 1985 of the following:

Occupational Health & Safety Officials have been advised of recent failures of partial roof structures in the Province of Newfoundland, where investigation results have determined the failures to be related to the substandard construction of Open Web Steel Joists manufactured by Robb Engineering between the years 1970 - 1985.

As a precautionary measure, Occupational Health & Safety recommend that all owners of commercial buildings constructed within this time frame and in which Open Web Steel Joists were incorporated in the design to be inspected.

Occupational Health & Safety shall make available the names of companies licensed to practice on PEI and qualified to perform these inspections.

For further information on this matter please contact George Stewart, Manager of Occupational Health & Safety at 1-800-237-5049.
