Wayne Murphy to Retire

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns, as President of the Executive Council, today advised that he has received notice from Wayne Murphy, FCA of his intention to retire as Auditor General effective July 31, 2002.

Murphy began his career in the Office of the Auditor General holding various positions until 1986. In 1986, he was appointed Auditor General of Prince Edward Island and subsequently reappointed in August 1996.

"Mr. Murphy has had a long and distinguished career in the service of Islanders. I am sure he looks forward to more time with family and friends, and on behalf of all Islanders I wish him well in retirement," said the Premier.

Wayne Murphy has served as President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Prince Edward Island and has also been a member of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, a member of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Comprehensive Auditing Foundation, a member of the Public Sector Accounting and Auditing Board and the Regulatory Legislation Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Mr. Murphy is currently an associate of the Public Sector Accounting and Auditing Board.

"It has been a privilege and an honour to serve the Legislative Assembly in this important role. Cooperation and the government's support of the independence of the Auditor General as a servant of the Legislative Assembly was helpful to me in carrying out my duties under the Audit Act," stated Mr. Murphy.

The Premier stated that, consistent with the provisions of the Audit Act, Executive Council will consider a successor for Murphy at its first opportunity.
