Watts Communications is expanding its facility in the West Royalty Industrial Park by 125 workstations. With this expansion, 80 jobs will be created within the first year, growing to a total of 176 jobs.
Watts President Colin Taylor made the announcement today at the company's telecommunications centre in West Royalty.
"In addition to the expansion, Watts will be buying the building and land where we currently operate in West Royalty, from the Province," said Taylor. "Improvements to the facility will be completed by April 2000. At that point, we will begin hiring an additional 80 employees to start work at the expanded facility."
The expansion of Watts includes extensive renovations to the first floor of the Watts Centre in West Royalty. An additional 15,000 square feet will be used to accommodate the new workstations, office space, washrooms, lunch and conference area.
Since 1996, the company has grown to include facilities in both Charlottetown and Summerside. With the completion of this expansion, Watts will employ more than 600 Islanders.
Cost of the expansion, including leasehold improvements, training, equipment and the purchase of the building, totals over $4 million. The terms of the agreement with Government are still under negotiations and will be released when finalized.
