Waste Management Standards Remain High

Honourable Chester Gillan, Acting Minister of Technology and Environment, today emphasized that issuing a second Request for Proposals (RFP) for the operation of waste management services in the province does not mean the standards or criteria requested have been diluted or lessened in any way.

"The original high standards set for the first RFP continue to be in effect for the second round," said Mr. Gillan. "Islanders should also be assured that regardless of whether a private or public concern is in charge of waste services, the same standards for initial set up and continued operation will be expected." He also emphasized that the Department of Technology and Environment as a regulatory body, will ensure all regulations, policies and procedures are adhered to regardless who provides the service.

Mister Gillan also clarified the costing arrangements for waste services. Under the conditions set out in the RFP, the cost charged to residents by a private utility must remain the same for the first five years. After that time, prices must be reviewed by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission prior to any change.
