Warm weather raises fire index

Recent hot temperatures, combined with wind and a lack of precipitation, have pushed the Island’s Fire Weather Index (FWI) to Extreme in central and southern Prince Edward Island and Very High in all other regions of the province. High temperatures and dry conditions are forecast to continue for the next few days and fire managers are concerned about the potential for more serious fires.

“All burning permits are suspended and we are urging extreme caution with any outdoor flame such as barbecues or cigarettes,” said Brian Brown, fire manager with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry. “The current conditions mean that dry grass, leaves and twigs are highly combustible and even a small fire can quickly get out of control when weather conditions are like this.”

Two small fires were reported yesterday in the Bedeque and Rocky Point areas. Nether fire resulted in significant damage but investigations are ongoing and charges may be laid. Brown noted that people who start fires can be held liable for fire suppression costs and face years of expensive litigation in cases where physical harm occurred or where property was damaged or lost.

Excluding towns and cities that have their own fire regulations, burning permits are required for any outdoor fire from March 15 - December 1 each year and burning can only occur when the Fire Weather Index (FWI) is Low and wind speeds are 10km/hr or less. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to check the forecast and have accurate FWI information before initiating any fire. They must also report the proposed fire area to their local fire brigade prior to initiating the fire and have adequate personnel and resources on hand to prevent any escapes. Burning permits are available free of charge from any forest district office.

With the forecast being warm and windy for the next several days, fire managers are asking people to be extra cautious while enjoying their summer activities.

Fire Weather Index information is available from any forest district office, online at www.gov.pe.ca/forestry/fire or by calling (902) 368 4800 after hours to hear an automated FWI recording.
