East Prince Health is introducing a new volunteer role in the Prince County Hospital Breast Screening Clinic. Volunteers will offer information and support to women as they arrive for mammogram testing on the second floor of the hospital.
Josephine Ripley, Radiology Manager explains, "We look forward to having volunteers involved as a welcoming support for those attending the clinic. Many times women do not know what to expect when they arrive and a volunteer's direction and caring approach can help put them at ease. Volunteers will also offer information in pamphlets and a video."
Breast Screening has long been recognized in the health field as very important in the early detection of cancer. Healthcare professionals advise that women ages 50-69 have regular testing. October is Breast Cancer awareness month to heighten awareness of this important issue.
The weekday clinics at Prince County Hospital will have 2 volunteers each afternoon. DeAnna Heckbert, Volunteer Services Coordinator, will be recruiting new volunteers. She notes that, "Most women can relate to having had a mammogram themselves, and as volunteers they can offer understanding to help others feel more comfortable."
The Breast Screening Clinic will require 20 volunteers, and training sessions are being planned with assistance from Heather Bulger, Clinic Leader. Those interested in learning more about this opportunity for volunteering may call 432-2576, EPH Volunteer Services.
