The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, today announced the second annual Volunteer Recognition Awards. Last year, for the first time, government recognized seven outstanding Islanders for their dedication to their communities.
“Following the International Year Of The Volunteer this award was created to build on the momentum of the many government and community initiatives designed to celebrate volunteer contributions in our communities,” said Minister MacFadyen. “I encourage all Islanders to think about the many volunteers who assist our communities and nominate outstanding volunteers for this provincial award.”
Last year’s recipients were Louise Arsenault, St. Gilbert; Shirley Arsenault, Stratford; Lynda Curtis, Alberton; Allan Doyle, Mt. Stewart; Nanne Garnham, North Milton; Clarence MacDonald, Souris; and Elaine MacLennan, Strathcona.
“Each of the former recipients of this award have given more than 20 years of volunteer service in our communities, our churches and our schools, giving of their time and their talents without hesitation,” said Minister MacFadyen. “These and many other Islanders give countless hours everyday and keep our communities vibrant and active.”
The deadline for individuals or organizations to nominate an Islander for the volunteer recognition awards is November 30, 2004.
